That’s right, we’re celebrating Día de San Patricio (Saint Patrick’s Day) at Cactus Cantina on March 17th! “But why?”, you may ask! What’s Saint Patrick’s Day got to do with Mexico? Well, here’s the story…
Saint Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in Mexico for many years in honour of the foreign soldiers who fought for Mexico against the U.S.A. during the 1846-48 Mexican-American War. The foreign soldiers (most of them recent immigrants to America), were organised into an army battalion called the San Patricios, led by an Irish soldier called John Patrick Riley.
Although the battalion included Canadian, English, French, Italian, Polish, Scottish, Spanish and Swiss soldiers, the largest complement of men consisted of Irish and German immigrants and the name ‘San Patricios’ stuck. To this day Mexicans celebrate Día de San Patricio, not only to honour Saint Patrick, but also the foreign war heroes of the San Patricios battalion.
Of course, Mexicans also like a good excuse to have a party! Join us at Cactus Cantina on Monday 17 March to help us celebrate Día de San Patricio and you can order our lime margaritas or Heineken bottled beer for just AED 25. As they say in Ireland, sláinte!
