  • Mexico’s real independence day!

Many people still think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s independence day. However, Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on 5 May 1862, which took place some 40 years after the war independence had been won!

Mexican’s love to commemorate famous battles and their war heroes. And they love to party! So, perhaps its no surprise that two of Mexico’s biggest fiestas commemorate military victories: Cinco de Mayo marking the unexpected victory against the French forces of Napoleon and the earlier El Grito de Dolores (the Cry of Dolores), celebrating the beginning of Mexico’s war of independence on 16 September 1810.

There is also Heroica Defensa de Veracruz, on April 21st, remembering the valiant defense against the U.S. military occupation of the port city of Veracruz in 1914. Then we have Día de los Niños Héroes on 13 September celebrating the Battle of Chapultepec during the Mexican–American War of 1847 and the heroic teenage military cadets who died defending Mexico City’s Chapultepec Castle against invading U.S. forces. And then there is Consumación de la Independencia on September 27th, which commemorates the end of the war of independence in 1821.

This month at Cactus Cantina we’re celebrating Día de la Independencia (Mexican Independence Day) or El Grito de Dolores (the Cry of Dolores). El Grito was the patriotic speech of Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary leader Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla announcing the start of the Mexican War of Independence to his congregation and revolutionary comrades in the church of the small town of Dolores.

These days El Grito de Dolores, begins on the night of September 15th with the Mexican president and government officials in towns and cities all over Mexico delivering a version of Hidalgo’s famous speech. The following day, September 16th, is a fiesta patria (patriot festival) marked by street parades, marching bands and fiestas.

You can help us celebrate El Grito de la Indepedencia on Tuesday 16 September (6pm ’till midnight) at Cactus Cantina! It’s going to be fun and our lime margaritas are just AED 25 each all night!

    ¡Viva Hidalgo!

    ¡Viva la Independencia Nacional!

    ¡Viva México!
